It's a Tuesday afternoon and I'm sitting in our conference room in Boca Raton. Across the table is a guy named Mike.
Mike is 59 years old. He built a manufacturing company from nothing: started it in his garage, grew it to 40 employees, and six months ago he sold it for just under eight million dollars. Mike should be celebrating. He's not. His knee is bouncing under the table. His wife is next to him and she hasn't said a word.
I ask him what's on his mind.
"I've never had this much money in my life. And I've never been this scared."
I let that sit for a second. Then I ask what he's scared of.
"I'm scared I'm going to screw this up. I'm scared the market's going to crash and I'm going to lose half of it before I figure out what to do. I'm scared my wife is going to have to go back to work if something happens to me."
Mike is not an unsophisticated guy. He ran a business for 22 years. He understands risk. But this is different. This isn't business capital. This is everything. His entire future is sitting in a money market account because he's too afraid to move it.
So I pull out a blank sheet of paper. I draw a line down the middle. On the left side I write "Protected." On the right side I write "Growth."
"Mike, what if we took the first thing off the table? What if we built a structure where your essential income ... the money you and your wife need to live on every month for the rest of your lives ... was protected? Not dependent on the market. Not dependent on timing. Protected. Then, and only then, we take the rest and invest it for growth. Because now we're playing with money you don't need next month or next year."
His wife spoke for the first time. She said: "That's what I've been asking for. I just didn't know how to say it."
That was the moment I knew our framework was right. Mike and his wife are clients today. He golfs four days a week. She started a small nonprofit. They don't call me when the market drops. You know why? Because they already know the answer. The income is protected. The plan is in place. They're okay.
That's what we do. We don't sell products. We don't chase performance. We build the structure that lets people stop worrying and start living.
